Grampy and I have been going through withdrawals this week because we haven’t seen Amara in forever! Her Aunt was here visiting from Virginia last week and it was one of her other Grandpa’s birthdays. PLUS, I worked a lot of extra hours last week so I didn’t get to just “stop by” for any short visits. I have also missed Amara’s Mommy something fierce. Well, Friday was a short day for me so I told Jenna that I would meet them at their house after school. I might have made it to go with her to pick Amara up (which I love to do) but you never know with traffic and I didn’t want to risk being late. I got to their house before they did and got many hugs and kisses from the dogs and cats.
They got home and Amara came rushing at me and threw her arms around me as if we hadn’t seen each other in forever — it was wonderful! She immediately started telling me — going at a thousand words a minute — that she had been chosen Special Citizen of the Week! This is a coveted award! She explained to me that it means for one week you don’t sit at your group table but you sit at a special desk by yourself next to the teacher! The person who had it last week was sick one day and so they are going to split the day on Monday! The other student will sit at the desk in the morning and she will have it for the afternoon and then the rest of the week. “That’s fair Grandma!” and she is throwing her arms in the air and walking around in circles while she talked at super sonic speed. I thought it was so neat the way she was willing to share her first day! She was just thrilled. This may have been more exciting than the honor roll, her author award and everything else combined!
Other perks — you get a special stuffed animal on your desk, you get to help the teacher all week and you receive a “get out of homework free” pass.
Jenna told me about picking her up from school — normally Amara is lagging towards the back of the line talking to all her friends but Friday she was at the front of the line going full speed and grinning from ear to ear! She told Jenna the exciting news and then she had to go tell everybody else! She was so proud. When she got home, of course she told me and then she couldn’t wait to call and tell her Daddy! The kids have done such a great job with her. We went to Jamba Juice and then to the Barnes & Noble. I think it is wonderful that going to the bookstore for Amara is like being let loose in the candy store! She loves books. Jenna let her get some new ones to celebrate.
AND — Jenna went through Amara’s backpack and she had gotten her mid-trimester review — it isn’t a report card just something to let the parents know how the kids are doing so far — all fives and one 5+ in reading! Amara looks at me and says — “This has been a good day for me Grandma”. It sure was a fun afternoon for me.
What a wonderful day for all!!!!! Thanks for sharing the joy!
Sarah
Hi Sarah,
I will gladly share her with you – even if we do have to do it electronically! Much like your pictures – she brightens any day!
Wow! What an honor bestowed upon a truly deserving gal—proven so by her response to having to share the first day. Congratulations! And another CONGRATS for the awesome review. SMART Citizen of the Week, I say! 🙂
She really is pretty darned special and I am so proud of the job the kids are doing raising her!
What an exciting day!! I’m looking forward to hearing how her special week went!! 🙂
Oh and you know you will! She will be here Saturday night and I will get you every detail! Love you!
I imagine her teachers wishes she had a class full or students like her. I hope she enjoyed the special privileges fully.
She is in a pre-GATE class so her teacher has some of the better students but she is at the top! It is so great to see her be so excited to learn and to want to read all the time – and yet still be a crazy little girl out drenching Grandma with the Super Soaker! I’ve said it before but 7 really is a fun age!
What a special little girl! It is so great to live close by and wonderful to be able to pick them up at school when all the news is fresh and exciting.
I’m so glad they are close by and I love it that when I am at school her friends know – that’s Amara’s Grandma!
Congratulations to Amara. I love seeing kids get rewarded for good things. It’s so much better to reward good behavior than it is to punish bad behavior.
She sure brings a lot of joy into our lives!
There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing a grandchild succeed. Congratulations to Amara!
Thanks Susan! She is certainly going to keep us on our toes!
So sweet, that was a good day and I love how she appreciated it and verbalized her joy to her Gram. We all need to be queen for a day (or a week) once in a while:)
What a sweet little granddaughter. Thoughtful just like her mom and grandma. 🙂
