The fist bump ritual

When I first wrote about Grampy flying Amara out to the car I spoke of it as a tradition, but really it was just another one of our rituals. Grampy would fly her to the car. Grandma would buckle her in to her car seat. Grampy would give her a kiss and do “the fist bump” and then finally Grandma would get to collect her goodbye kisses. It had to be done in that order. You can see why Jenna thinks we stretch these things out just a bit but… we can’t help it! I remember the one time when Grampy got talking to Amara’s Daddy and Amara thought he had forgotten to give her the bump. Her bottom lip quivered and tears started running down her cheek. These rituals are important stuff.

Well the bump ritual has got even better! Grampy and I have been watching a new show called Detroit 187 and in this episode one of the younger police officers was teaching one of the older police officers about the fist bump. You

Bump,

Blow it Up,

Talk About It!

Well of course the first thing to go through our minds was — we have to teach that to Amara! She loved it and it became a new part of the ritual. Until her Mother, who you know is Genius, came up with this.

Bump,

Blow it Up,

Blog About It!

Amara blogging and Grandpa talking on the phone

Grampy still uses “talk about it”. He says he’s keeping it Old School!

From blowing kisses to peace signs to fist bumps–those non-verbal rituals are important!

We have plenty of them! Do you think someday she’ll be sharing these with her own kids? Please, can I be around to watch!!!!
