Talk to the Hand Grampy

I was scanning a document for Grampy Sunday while Amara watched. I explained what I was doing and she thought it would be really cool to scan her hand. Why not? She stood with her hand on the scanner bed as she babbled away and I scanned her hand. She moved! Big deal! We just did it over and this time I’m not sure she even breathed! I opened the picture and she was thrilled so I asked her if she wanted me to print it? Her eyes got really big and I could see the wheels turning as she said “Yes but don’t tell Grandpa.” Amara loves secrets! We printed it to regular paper so it looked about the same size as her own with very long fingers and DIRT! Of course, I teased her about the dirt. I had teased her earlier about the bruise on her arm that came off with a washcloth! Magic!

Amara is at the age where she loves pranking people especially Grandpa so she took her handprint into our room where she slipped it under the edge of bedspread, which was on the floor. It made it look like there was a hand sticking out! At least that was Amara’s hope. I went to retrieve Grampy so that he would be shocked and surprised! He was just that! He is so great about catching onto things and playing them for all that they are worth. When he finally realized it was just Amara’s handprint he scooped it up, put it in front of his face and told Amara to “talk to the hand”. We all laughed and Amara and I took the handprint back to the dining room where she had been working on a letter earlier. Inspiration hit again! She decided to draw a face on the hand so that she could show it to Grandpa again and it would look like the hand could talk back!

Amara tells Grampy to Talk to the Hand

Back to his office she went with her handprint! She had Grampy busting up. He thought she should write “talk to the hand” on the picture. I didn’t feel it needed saying but Amara finally gave Grampy his way! He can be very persistent.

Those ideas that begin and then grow, change and grow some more are my favorite kind of creative moments. So glad you give Amara those opportunities.
